It's not a lion! It's not a beast! This time, it's a mermaid! Ariel moves her arms and sequined fins in vapid swimming motions, designed to make us believe she is "under the sea. Fits right in with a Disney ride concept, which unfortunately, is the overwhelming subtext of this show. Ariel traverses what appears to be lighted Mylar shower curtains simulating waves and water, not unlike the technique used for the shipwreck in the ill-fated "Tarzan. But Ariel, like Belle in "Beauty and Sex crime news Beast," is a truly formidable and appealing female character, one that speaks to budding Private care inc sold, and the one redeeming quality of the overblown musical. She rebels against a tyrannical father and insists on making her own decisions. Though her littpe is to be a siren, she finds this role too confining and ventures to the surface, defying family and friends -- not to mention gravity -- in a simulation worthy of another ride through scrims and scenery, and saves the tempest-tossed Prince Eric. To her credit, as taken as she is with him, her goal to live in "The World Above," overrides her romantic desires. These ideas are inspiring for young girls, but the kudos for this wonderful character goes, not to Disney, but to Hans Christian Andersen and the beloved animated film scored by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. The other actors, unfortunately, are commodities and none has star power, with the obvious exception, of course, of Sherie Regiew Scott, who wowed audiences in "Aida" and "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. The audience was filled with young girls dressed as their favorite mermaids, university students and Tucson locals, all buzzing about their mutual excitement for the show to begin. Audience member Brian Turner had never seen the original Walt Disney film and was eager to see the show. Diana Huey, an actress and singer from Seattle, played Ariel in the show. Another audience member, Trey Crane, noticed the remarkable resemblance of Huey and Benson's voices. The visuals of the show were animated, appropriate and adaptable for the different scenes. Regarding choreography, the production had remarkable dance numbers and consistently included transitions that preserved the illusion of the actors imitating mermaids. The show drew another parallel to Cirque du Soleil by attaching harnesses to the actors and lifting them off the ground and across the stage to resemble swimming motions. Danielle Gervais, a freshman at the University of Arizona, said she admired the mechanics used during the show and how they affected the overall quality of the production. She especially liked how the actors "swam" when they were lifted into the air. However, in contrast to the sets and mechanics of the show, there were a few cosmetic hiccups. Although the mermaid costumes were beautiful and acted as an optical illusion, the more petite actresses, specifically Ariel herself, seemed to be, ironically, drowning in them. However, these minor details did not affect the story. The show opened with a scene that was a variation to the original opening in the Disney film. However, in the Broadway production, the play opened with Ariel herself, perhaps as a way to better intrigue audience members. Perhaps the variation in humor is due to the difference in audience members, or maybe the directors and producers just wanted to include jokes that only mature audience members would...

The tale of the Little Mermaid is probably best known as the Disney version; the mermaid wants the prince, gives up everything, gets the prince, and they live happily ever after. The Northern Ballet has put on the Hans Christen Anderson version of the tale, one much darker and full of despair and longing. As always, the Northern Ballet delivers a stunning foray into story. The set, made of two simple pieces which were moved to show either water or land, was a perfect backdrop for the beautiful dancers. The costumes, both those of the undersea dancers as well as those on land, were an excellently balanced blend of soft ocean colours and more dramatic, solid hues. Dancing the part of Marillla, the little mermaid, is Abigail Prudames. Her depiction of the adventurous mermaid who wants to go above the water was beautifully danced. The transition from curious, lovelorn girl to desperate, devastated and cast-aside woman was beautifully done, with her pain clear in every silent scream. Prince Adair, danced by Joseph Taylor, was perfectly cast. His movements were sharp and clear, his facial expressions exactly right to convey his confusion and desire, his happiness and his longing. Though he gets his happily ever after, it is clear he knows the price which has been paid. Taylor does an excellent job of keeping the audience enthralled. Topliss, in his intricate mask and costume, moves beautifully as he bestows the cursed gift on the little mermaid and then demands payment at the very end. Dana comes across as pure and light hearted; this makes it difficult to root against her, even as the little mermaid has given up everything. The timing of the dancers was perfect, their dancing smooth and precise. The intensity of the music by an outstanding orchestra feeds...
