Sometimes this date is changed during the course of your pregnancy, but mostly it stays the same and is looked forward to with great anticipation. The reality percenf however that only five per cent of babies arrive on the day they are expected. Ideally you should pdegnant two weeks either side of your due date. Giving birth anywhere between 37 to 42 weeks is considered normal. There is evidence to suggest Snow plows for riding mowers the current methods of estimating the due date may in fact not pecrent as pdegnant as we think. One study found first time mothers gave birth on average 5 days over their due date and second time mothers gave birth on average 2 days after their due date. Most studies I reviewed suggested Ovrrdue first time mothers had longer pregnancies than women who had a baby before. Around 10 per Overdue pregnant percent of pregnancies do go beyond 42 weeks. When this occurs it is known as post-term or a prolonged pregnancy. Concerns regarding problems with the baby increases after 42 pregnnant. Your due date has come and gone. Here's how passing the week mark can affect your pregnancy and delivery. Ask any mom whose pregnancy went into extra innings: Right around your due date, the phone calls, emails and texts start coming: But the first thing to know is this: Your due date is just an estimate. In fact, only 5 percent of babies are born on theirs. Despite that fact, many women get hung up on those dates and feel distress when they come and go, Vidaeff adds. In the first trimester, your due date is calculated by adding 40 weeks days to the first day of your last menstrual period, then synched with ultrasound images that date the age of the embryo or fetus. But the result is just an educated "guesstimate. Going into overtime The strict medical definition of "post-term" aka "post-date" is a pregnancy that goes beyond 42 weeks. However, recent research has shown that delivery after 40 weeks may come with certain risks, and OB-GYNs have responded in kind. At the week mark, your doctor or midwife will become more vigilant about monitoring the baby. Post-term infants are at higher risk for problems with glucose metabolism, which can lead to excessive birth weight, and for inhaling meconium fecal waste ; this can cause breathing problems or infection at birth. Amniotic fluid levels can drop, and after 42 weeks, the placenta may not work as well as it did earlier. Your caregiver will regularly check your amniotic fluid level, the baby's heart rate and his estimated weight, which increases significantly from 40 to 42 weeks. When baby needs a nudge After 39 or 40 weeks, it's sometimes best to deliver sooner rather than later: Studies have shown that newborn admissions to the neonatal intensive care unit NICU...

Only 5 percent of women give birth when they think they will. Read on to find out when your baby will make his appearance. By Lauren Picker from Parents Magazine. As a journalist who's accustomed to meeting deadlines, I wasn't surprised when, during my first pregnancy, I went into labor on my due date. The second time around was another matter. My due date came and went. And went, and went, and went. It wasn't until the day before my doctor planned to induce me—at nearly 42 weeks pregnant —that I finally went into labor. My experience brought home one of the essential truths of pregnancy: Your due date is anything but predictable. Still, your doctor needs to determine one that's as accurate as possible so that any necessary tests are done at the correct time. To calculate your due date , your doctor will take the first day of your last menstrual period LMP , and add days the equivalent of 40 weeks. For example, if your last period started on September 1, your due date would be June 7. This method assumes that your period arrives like clockwork every 28 days. If your cycles are longer, you're likely to deliver later than your due date; if they're shorter, expect to deliver earlier. A first-trimester sonogram is more trustworthy. Your doctor measures the length of the fetus and size of the gestational sac. If these numbers don't match up with what your LMP would predict, she may adjust your due date. But even if your doctor can pinpoint your due date with laserlike precision, don't expect your baby to show up right on schedule. Because, for all the windows into your womb, no one really understands what triggers labor. One possible but, as my experience shows, imperfect predictor: If...

J ack, my third child, arrived last month, 20 days late. My first two babies were 15 days late. But a day shy of week 43? That is virtually record-breaking — and, some would say, slightly mad. For the last week I barely left the house. I knew what I was doing and was happy with my decision. But I didn't want to hear what anyone else had to say about it. Especially if it was: The Mamas used to have an online resource — sadly now defunct — which featured the stories of dozens of women who had gone past 42 weeks, some of them as far as 48 weeks. Many of the most extreme examples were Mormon — some with more than half a dozen children. Historically, tales of weirdly overdue babies are not unprecedented. The actor Jackie Chan claims his mother carried him for 12 months before he was born by caesarean section, weighing 12lb. There is also a story of a woman in a prisoner of war camp who allegedly waited until the camp was liberated to give birth — at 12 months' gestation. But maybe these claims are not so odd when you remember that the average pregnancy is actually nearer 10 months than nine. So if you give birth at 43 weeks, you are heading towards 11 months anyway. I held out as long as I could, but in the end Jack was induced. I wish it could have been otherwise. The day before he was born, the hospital consultant had made it clear that she didn't agree with me remaining pregnant for a day longer. Despite the fact that there were no signs that there was anything wrong, there was a risk of stillbirth, she said. I could have waited another day or...
