How to castrate pygmy goats

The breed of pygmy goat as we know it in this country owes its origin to the cross-breeding of two different types of miniature goat found in the equatorial regions of Africa — The West African Dastrate, with its disproportionately short legs, deep body and short neck, and the Nigerian Dwarf. The resultant variety is better proportioned and makes for an extremely endearing looking animal. Both females and castrated males pyg,y make good pets but, unless you are an experienced keeper, owning at least Free naked papi galleries a dozen females, you should never buy an entire male as they can be very difficult, demonstrative and have some pretty unpleasant habits — such as peeing down their legs and beards to attract females. Male goats should be castrated very young to avoid this undesirable behaviour developing as, once the male character traits have established, although they may diminish, they may not disappear castratd. As goats are a cloven footed animal like cows castratr sheep every movement has to be casttate so you cannot move a goat onto your premises without first obtaining a holding number — this you can do through your local DEFRA office which will also give you a herd number. Pig movement forms have now been moved online but for goats they are still paper and something you will have to get used to if you are moving your goats regularly. The only occasion that you will be allowed to move your goat without a form is when taking it to the vet. Goats are also required to have two tags, or a tag and a tattoo, displaying the same number, one in each ear. Never keep less than two pygmy How to castrate pygmy goats, they are herd animals and as such thrive on company...

Banding or castrating pygmy goat Discussion in ' Goats ' started by judymayes , Mar 20, Mar 20, 1. I was wondering when it is too old to band or castrate a Pygmy Goat Buck kid and in everyones opinion whis is the prefered choice of method used today banding or castrating Judy mayes. Mar 20, 2. It is never too late. We try to always band early. We just clamped both at 6 months this week, no problems. We will not cut. Mar 20, 3. I agree, it is never to late. I know of two pygmy bucks that were recently banded. One was about 2 and the other over a year. You do need a special banded, like the bull type to do it though. Mar 20, 4. However, never after 4 weeks, there is too much chance of heavy bleeding after that age. I would call my vet after 4 weeks to take care of cutting him. I prefer cutting to banding personally. They seem to get over the ordeal rather quickly. Loda Farm , Mar 20, Mar 21, 5. We use the Burdizo method; quick and from studies shown to be the least painful method. The bucklings are still too young but we just finished 2 of the ram lambs at 4 weeks old. If you aren't familiar with the procedure look at Fiasco Farms web site - she has a very good tutorial. We use Rescue Remedy an hour before and then another dose during. Liese , Mar 21, Mar 21, 6. We band our but never before the age of 6 weeks. I could not imagine...

Your support of our advertisers helps support GoatWorld! Send this Page to a Friend! In last issue I spoke of the reasons for performing castration. Now I will discuss the methods of castration available to goat owners. First, what is castration? Castration is the process by which the testes, epididymides and a portion of each spermatic cord are removed from a buck thereby making him a wether. This removal may be immediate as with the knife method, or may take several weeks as with the emasculatome or elastrator methods. Castration should take place at the youngest age possible since the stress of castration can adversely affect growth in older animals and the chances of complications increase. Buck kids can be castrated as soon as the testicles descend into the scrotum this can be from a few days of age to a week or more. Castration may be performed by one of three methods - the knife method, emasculatome method or elastrator method. Knife Method Cutting with a knife is the most reliable and least expensive method of castration. The kid is often held by an assistant who grasps the kid's hind and front legs of the same side with each hand. The kid usually has its back to the assistant. Begin by washing your hands and instruments knife or scalpel thoroughly with soap and water and then disinfectant. Next, wash the scrotum and disinfect. The testes should now be visible. Using your fingers, grasp one of the testis and pull downward. The testes are slick and difficult to hold onto, so grasp firmly. Do not to allow the testis or spermatic cord go back up into the scrotum once you have touched it as this will increase chances of infection. In young kids less than 4 or 5 weeks pull...

Unfortunately, only a few intact male goats bucks are really needed in the goat breeding world; and, those bucks are usually rather smelly. So, only a few bucks are wanted. Therefore, typically only the bucks that have the best bloodlines for milk production, dairy conformation, and hardiness are kept intact as herd sires. All other males are wethered or disposed of in other ways. Wethered male goats make very sweet pets and great 4H projects for kids. Surgically wethering goats is done by physically cutting and has the disadvantage of leaving an open wound. The burdizzo method crushes the spermatic cord. The major disadvantage of this method is that the cords are sometimes not completely crushed leaving the goat intact. It involves placing a thick elastic band around the scrotum above the testes of the goat which cuts off the blood supply and then waiting until the testes shrivel and fall off. This usually takes two to four weeks depending on the age of the goat when banded. Banding goats when they are younger seems to cause them less discomfort; however, banding them too early can lead to problems with urinary calculi. This can be very serious and even fatal. With urinary calculi, the goat develops stones like kidney stones in a human that prevent it from urinating. When a buckling is banded to wether it, the hormones that cause the urinary tract to grow slow down significantly. Therefore, the urinary tract stops growing. If a male goat is wethered too soon, the urinary tract may be very small and increase the chance for blockage. I am new to goats, At first I...

An elastic band constricts the flow of blood to the testis and scrotum, leaving them to die and fall off in approximately 2 weeks. It is a good idea to ask for help from a veterinarian or experienced rancher if you have never banded a goat. Purchase an elastrator from a farm and ranch supply store. It is a metal tool that is used to secure the rubber band around the scrotum. The bands should be thick enough and tight enough to lead to castration within a few weeks. Store your castration bands in the refrigerator until they are ready for use. This will keep the rubber from breaking down. Ask your local veterinarian to provide pain reliever and tetanus anti-toxin. You will need some antiseptic spray in case of infection. Take your goat kid to the veterinarian at the first sign of an infection. Plan to castrate your kid within 8 weeks of birth. They reach sexual maturity at this time and can begin impregnating your doe female goats. You can have short-scrotum goats if a testis is pushed into the belly cavity. Administer a dose of adult aspirin or a shot of Banamine a half hour before you do the procedure. Banding is painful to the goat, so administering anti-inflammatories can reduce discomfort. To reduce pain further, you can administer lidocaine to numb the area during the banding period. Soak your castration band in alcohol for 5 minutes before placing it in the elastrator. Ask a friend to help you by holding the kid down. Set the kid in your helpers lap, so that his belly is up and his front hooves are restrained. Attach the rubber band to the front prongs of the elastrator. Squeeze the elastrator handles to expand the band. Insert the scrotum and testis...
