Copyright American Medical Association. The control group consisted of 14 patients with benign breast tumors 7 with fibrocystic disease and 7 with fibroadenoma. Data on primary tumor stage, age, estrogen receptor status, Breast cancer and elevated beta human node status, distant metastases, and TNM staging according to the Union Internationale Contre le Cancer were reviewed and recorded. It is a multifunctional polypeptide, promoting angiogenesis, accumulation of extracellular matrix glycoproteins, and cell adhesion proteins, while inhibiting growth of both epithelial and immune cells. From November to February60 consecutive patients with invasive breast cancer were included in the study. Venous blood samples were collected before surgery. All 60 patients were women aged between 32 and 79 years mean, Except for those with distant metastases, all patients underwent modified radical mastectomy, and the diagnosis of breast cancer was confirmed by histological examination. Invasive breast cancer was defined as carcinoma, regardless of origin duct or lobulewith invasion to or beyond the basement membrane. Each patient was assessed preoperatively by a thorough physical examination, chest radiography, level of serum alkaline phosphatase, and mammogram. Bone scan and abdominal ultrasonography were performed for all patients with provisional clinical stage III disease to rule out the presence of distant metastases. Regardless of the provisional clinical stage, all patients with elevated serum alkaline phosphatase, special complaints such as bone pain, or any specific findings indicating the possibility of distant metastases such as hepatomegaly also underwent bone scan and abdominal ultrsonography to detect possible distant metastases. Estrogen receptor status was determined by immunohistochemical staining. Color development was performed xancer a tetramethyl benzidine—hydrogen dioxide mixture and terminated with sulfuric acid. The absorbance of each well was determined using a spectrophotometer. Cancfr P value of less than. The evaluation of the possible outcome of patients with breast cancer is important for planning...

The authors determined whether untreated breast cancer patients have elevated plasma levels of transforming growth factor-beta 1 TGF-beta 1. Increased plasma TGF-beta 1 levels recently were found after chemotherapy in patients with advanced breast cancer. However, it currently is unknown whether this elevation in plasma TGF-beta 1 is caused by chemotherapy-induced normal tissue damage or whether it results from the presence of the tumor. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to measure plasma TGF-beta 1 levels in 26 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients before and after definitive surgery. Patients were grouped by postoperative tumor status: The site of TGF-beta 1 production in the tumors was localized by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. The preoperative TGF-beta 1 levels in the three patient groups were similar; however, the postoperative plasma TGF-beta 1 levels differed by disease status. Transforming growth factor-beta 1 expression was found to be preferentially increased in the tumor stroma. After surgical removal of the primary tumor, the plasma TGF-beta 1 level normalizes in the majority of patients; persistently elevated levels correlate with the presence of lymph node metastases or overt residual tumor. These findings suggest that the usefulness of TGF-beta 1 as a potential plasma marker for breast tumors deserves further study. National Center for Biotechnology Information , U. Human chorionic gonadotropin hCG or b-hCG is a hormone that the placenta makes when a woman is pregnant. Certain cancer cells can also make it. An hCG test may be done to: The amount of hCG is usually measured by a blood test taken by a needle in the arm. It can also be measured from a urine sample. The level of hCG in your blood may be higher than normal because you are pregnant or you have a certain kind of bowel disease, a stomach ulcer or cirrhosis of the liver. Your HCG level can also be high if you smoke cannabis marijuana. An increased level of hCG in the blood may help your doctor diagnose: If you have liver, stomach, pancreatic, lung, breast or skin cancer, the level of hCG in your blood may be higher than normal. The hCG test results can help your doctor know if treatment is working: A decreased level or a return to normal levels of hCG may mean that the treatment is working. An unchanged level of hCG or an increase in levels may mean that the cancer is not responding to treatment, is still growing or has come back recurred. Depending on the result, your doctor will decide if you need more tests, any treatment or follow-up care. Call us toll-free at Or write us. Breast cancer is well known as a malignancy being strongly influenced by female steroids. Pregnancy is a protective factor against breast cancer. Human chorionic gonadotropin HCG is a candidate hormone which could mediate this antitumoral effect of pregnancy. For this review article, all original research articles on the role of HCG in breast cancer were considered, which are listed in PubMed database and were written in English. The role of HCG in breast cancer seems to be a paradox. Placental heterodimeric HCG acts as a protective agent by imprinting a permanent genomic signature of the mammary gland determining a refractory condition to malignant transformation which is characterized by cellular differentiation, apoptosis and growth inhibition. Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women worldwide, with more than 1. Every year, about half a million women die of this disease [ 1 ]. For over a hundred years, since the regression of metastatic breast cancer after an oophorectomy was reported, it has been recognized that this tumor entity is strongly influenced by hormonal factors. Further reports indicated that levels of most sex steroid hormones are strongly associated with breast cancer risk [ 3 ]. With regard to reproductive peptide sex hormones, prolactin plasma levels have previously been reported to affect the risk of breast cancer development in postmenopausal women [ 4 ]. A pregnancy, particularly under the age of twenty, exerts a strong protective effect against this disease [ 7 ]. When assessing the effect of parity on prognosis of breast cancer patients, not only the parous status but also the number of childbirths and the age at first delivery have to be taken into account [ 8 ]. However, many reports on these topics are highly controversial. Concerning the role of parous status on breast cancer prognosis, some studies found...

Jan 10, - Transforming growth factor-beta (TGFβ)1 is thought to be implicated in breast cancer progression. However, data about the influence of TGFβ1. Abstract. Mutations in the Adenomatous Polyposis Coli (APC) tumor suppressor gene or the β- catenin gene are present in most colon cancers and less. Some important evidence regarding this cytokine has been reported in human breast cancer. Analysis of gene expression signatures reveal that TGF-β signaling.
